An interface that gets out of the way

The measure of a good writing tool is how little of it you notice. Ember was designed around that idea rather than around a feature list.

• A clean surface, not a cockpit. There is no wall of buttons between you and the page. You get a beautiful, native Mac window and room to write.
• A markdown editor that stays quiet. Structure your thoughts with simple markdown and watch it render cleanly, without a floating toolbar chasing your cursor around the screen.
• Typography you can settle into. Adjust the font, the size, and the line spacing until the page feels right, then forget the controls exist.

Silence is the feature

A distraction-free app cannot only look calm. It has to actually leave you alone, which means refusing the things that pull writers out of their flow.

• No notifications demanding your attention. Ember sends no push notifications, no reminders to write, no nudges toward the app. When you close it, it stays closed and quiet.
• No AI reading over your shoulder. Ember has no AI, ever. It never reads, writes, summarizes, or suggests a single word. There is no assistant finishing your sentences or telling you what you meant. The page is yours and only yours.
• Nothing done on your behalf. Ember's whole philosophy is restraint. It holds what you give it and shows it back, and otherwise it stays out of the way.

A calm surface can still hold a whole life underneath it. When you are ready, Ember quietly connects what you write to the rest of your world, without ever cluttering the page.

Type @ to mention a person and that entry is linked to them forever, so you can later open anyone and find every moment you shared. Group related entries into Stories that span years. Keep the different parts of your life in color-coded Worlds. None of this crowds the writing view. It simply waits, out of sight, until you go looking for it.

A private place to think

Real focus needs real privacy, the confidence that nothing you write is being watched or sent anywhere. Ember is local-first and native to macOS, built in Swift, with no account and no server, and it works fully offline. Everything stays on your device and syncs only through your own iCloud if you choose to enable it. Your entry content is strictly blocked from ever leaving your machine.

Your writing is stored in an open JSON archive that is always yours to export. The core journal is free forever and never expires, with Ember Plus as an optional upgrade for iCloud sync and the full theme catalogue.
