The Map
The Map shows where your life happened: the places you wrote from, the places your stories went, and where your people live. It's the same map on your Mac, iPhone and iPad.
Opening the Map
- Mac and iPad: choose Map in the sidebar, below Stories, or press ⌘5.
- iPhone: tap the map button in the Journal. The Map opens as a page you can go back from.
What's on it
- Journal entries that have a location.
- Stories, at each of their places.
- People, where they live, shown with their photo or initials.
A pin's colour shows how recent it is: how long ago the moment was, or for a person, how long since you were last in touch.
Location is only ever added on purpose. Ember never records where you are in the background. An entry has a place only if you added one, so a sparse map is normal.
Opening a pin
Click or tap a pin to open its entry, story or person.
- Mac and iPad: it opens over the map. Choose ‹ Map to return exactly where you were.
- iPhone: it opens as a normal page, and back returns you to the map.
Filters
Choose Filter to open the filter panel (a popover on Mac and iPad, a sheet on iPhone).
- Show: Entries, Stories and People are separate switches, so you can show any combination.
- When: Any time, On This Day, On This Week or On This Month (the same day, week or month in earlier years, like the Journal), Past 30 days, This year, an earlier year, or a Custom range.
While a filter is on, a chip on the map names it. Clear it from the chip in one tap.
Plain or Realistic
The switch on the map changes how it looks, not what's on it. Plain is a quiet, simple map. Realistic is satellite imagery with labels, and becomes a globe when you zoom all the way out. Ember remembers your choice.
